Completed my diploma thesis under Miranda Webster (Stage 5 Leader, and Architect, Cameron Webster Architects) at the Mackintosh School of Architecture, in Glasgow, Scotland..
Final Design Thesis explores the question of how architecture can be used as a medium for social and ecological responsibility.
From research started at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO) I used the site of the soon-to-be disused grain silo at Vippetangen on the Oslo Harbour to create a facility to promote public awareness of the effects of Norway's oil industries, its impact on the rest of the Norwegian society, and humanising the permanence of man and man-made objects.
My diploma thesis received a commendation for the Sheppard Robson Sustainability Prize.

Norway is one of the worlds largest producers of crude petroleum, and did you know 4% of all extracted petroleum ends up being used in the production of polymers (plastics)?
Should they be held accountable? Should they play a larger role in cleaning up disposed plastics? Can they?
This thesis looks to expose our wasteful nature, bring forward our throw-away tendencies and add a human-factor to make us understand the longevity of our actions.
How can people understand that the plastic we use for 4minutes, will last for 400 years in our environment?
How can we use other natural resources to help fight this problem?
Many people don’t give the grain silo at Vippe a second thought. They don’t see the beauty, the monumentality, the potential. Architecture should be more than just a series of walls, floors, windows, and doors. We should use our built spaces to bring attention to a cause, while bringing the community together and help better our environment.
The thesis looks to link different scales. The Norwegian people, Norwegian resources, and the worlds oceans.
There are 5 major ocean gyres. Gyres are large systems of circulating ocean currents, particularly those involved with large wind movements. These major gyres are collecting our disposed plastics at an alarming rate.
But out-of-sight, out-of-mind, right?
Thats the general feeling for the majority of humans. We consume and dispose more plastic per year than there are fish in the ocean.
